In Grenchen, brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth open their first movement and supplies factory for the watchmaking industry, in a workshop annexed to the family home.

A search by the directors for a new brand name finds “Certina”, taken from the Latin “certus”, meaning “assured, certain” in the year 1926. Quality at a modest price", a guiding principle which has remained with the Certina company to this day. By 1955, Certina was already represented in 75 countries, marketing complete men's and ladies' collections and different technical models such as automatics, with or without a calendar. 1959 marked an important moment in Certina's evolution, with the launching of its now-famous Double Security DS system. . The DS had propelled the company to a leadership position in the watchmaking industry. Than; Certina began concentrating on the sport and precision segments of the market and this made Certina is the one of the most preffered brand for many sporting events.

Certina is one of the most preffered brand of Moto Gp and Formula 1. The Swiss Brand further asserted this status by becoming Official Timekeeper of Moto GP, Formula 1 Grand Prix and Extreme sports events and the sponsor of many world champion riders like Muhammed Ali, Mike Doohan, Alex Criville, Petter Solberg, Site Gibernau and Thomas Lüthi. In 2005 Certina joined the Sauber Petronas Formula One team as Official Sponsor and had a partnership with the new BMW Sauber F1 Team.
Formula 1 star Robert Kubica becomes a Certina Ambassador.

Today Certina is taking a place at more than 50 countries all over the world and a part of the biggest watch manufaturer Swatch Group.
